👩‍🏫 How this lab works: Two students, one screen (or a voice call with one screen each). Decide who is Student 1 and who is Student 2 before you begin — every step says which of you does it. Each stage has a numbered step list: do the steps in order, and say every 🗣️ sentence out loud. Stage 5 is a two-player game you cannot win without talking. Stage 6 is free conversation.

👋 Start Here — What Is This Lesson About?

Today you are going to learn one single idea. It is a small idea, but once you see it, you will start noticing it everywhere — in machines, in animals, in your own body, and in your friends.

Two identical brass pendulum clocks side by side, swinging together
Two clocks. One beam. An odd kind of sympathy.
THE BIG WORD · 核心词
entrainment /ɪnˈtreɪnmənt/

Entrainment is when two things that have their own rhythm start sharing the same rhythm.
当两个各自有节奏的东西,开始共用同一个节奏,这就是 entrainment(同步/带动)。

Nobody has to be in charge. Nobody gives an order. They just have to be able to feel each other a little bit — and then, slowly, they fall together.

Two old clocks
⚡ Why does this matter? Because it is the same idea every time. The maths that explains two old clocks on a wall also explains fireflies in a tree, why you feel sleepy at the wrong time after a long flight, and why a whole stadium claps together without anyone deciding to. One idea, many costumes.

What you will do today

1
Haunted Clocks — meet a 360-year-old mystery and solve it with a slider.
2
Words — learn 18 laboratory words, and say every one of them out loud.
3
Fireflies — make 64 fireflies flash together, using one tiny rule.
4
Body Clock — find out why your own body is bad at telling the time.
5
Sync Game — you two become the machine. You cannot win without talking.
6
Talk Time — real conversation about rhythm in your own life.
😳 A warning before you begin. After this lesson you will not be able to stop seeing it. You will watch your class walk to lunch and notice everyone's feet matching. You will hear a crowd clap and think "ah, coupled oscillators." We are sorry. There is no way back.

🕰️ The Haunted Clocks of 1665

A Dutch scientist named Christiaan Huygens was sick in bed. He had two pendulum clocks on the same wooden beam. He noticed something that scared him a little: the two clocks always ended up swinging together. He separated them. They drifted apart. He put them back. Within 30 minutes — together again. He called it "an odd kind of sympathy." 1665年,荷兰科学家惠更斯生病卧床,他把两个钟摆挂在同一根木梁上,发现它们总会摆到一起。

✨ SYNCED!

⚡ The secret is the beam. Each swing gives the wooden beam a tiny push. The beam passes that push to the other clock. A push so small you cannot see it — but it never stops, and it always arrives at the same moment in the swing. Tiny + patient = powerful.
🤨 Even weirder: Huygens' real clocks synced in opposite directions — one swung left exactly when the other swung right. Scientists argued about why for 350 years. It was finally explained in 2015. Your homework is easier than that.

📚 Laboratory Vocabulary

Eighteen words. You will need them in Stage 6, so do not skip the speaking. 18

⚡ The big word: entrain (en-TRAIN) means to pull something into your rhythm. The beam entrained the clocks. Your alarm clock entrains your body. A drummer entrains a whole crowd.

✨ The Firefly Problem

In Southeast Asia, thousands of fireflies sit in one tree and flash all at exactly the same moment, all night. Nobody is in charge. There is no leader. So how do they do it?

Thousands of fireflies. No leader.
🌟 ALL IN SYNC!

⚡ The rule each firefly follows is tiny: "If I see a flash near me, I flash a little sooner next time." That is the whole rule. No leader, no plan, no group chat. Thousands of tiny rules add up to one giant rhythm. Scientists call this maths the Kuramoto model, and it also describes power grids, heart cells, and clapping crowds.
😂 You have seen this at school. On day one, 800 students flap like confused chickens. By week three, 800 students move as one. Nobody taught you to sync. You just entrained.

😴 Your Body Is A Clock (And It's Bad At Time)

Your body has its own clock inside your brain. Left completely alone in a dark cave, it runs on a 24.2 hour day — not 24. So every single day, something outside has to entrain it back into place. Those things are called zeitgebers (German for "time-givers").

An ornate brass twenty-four hour astronomical dial with a golden sun at its centre
Your body keeps its own time — badly.
😃 LOCKED ON!
Day 0
—
⚡ Morning sunlight is the strongest zeitgeber there is. Ten minutes of real daylight before 9am beats any amount of coffee, because coffee only hides tiredness — light actually moves the clock.
📱 The midnight phone is an evil zeitgeber. Your phone screen is bright blue light. Your brain is 300,000 years old and has no idea what a phone is. It looks at that blue glow and thinks: "Ah! The sun! It is morning! Let us begin the day!" It is 1am. You have a maths test at 8. Your brain is wrong and it is your fault.

👏 The Two-Human Sync Machine

Now you two are the oscillators. Tap together on the beat. The machine measures how well your team locks on. Round 3 has no sound at all — the only way to win is to talk to each other.

⚡ What the machine measures: not whether you are fast — whether you are together. Two players who are both slightly late but late by the same amount score higher than one perfect player and one messy one. That is exactly how a rowing team, a dragon boat crew 龙舟队, and a lion dance 舞狮 work.
🗣️ You must say these out loud to play:
"Ready? Three, two, one, GO!"
"Slow down! You're rushing."
"Speed up — you're dragging."
"Let's follow my hand. Watch me."
"We're locked on! Don't stop!"

🗣️ Talk Time — Conversation Topics

No sliders, no games. Just the two of you talking about rhythm in real life. Tap 🔊 on any question to hear it. Answer in full sentences — one word is not an answer.

💬 Useful phrases — use these all through the conversation

⚡ Final Challenge — The 60-Second Explain

One student explains entrainment to the other for 60 seconds without stopping, using at least five of the words below. Then swap. If you stop for more than 3 seconds, your partner says "Keep going!" Keep going!"
