🇺🇸 The Art of the One-on-One Debate 🇹🇭
In the summer and autumn of 1858, in the American state of Illinois, two men running for the Senate held seven public debates. Their names were Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas.
The two men disagreed about one huge moral question of their time: slavery. There were no microphones and no television. One speaker talked for 60 minutes, the other answered for 90 minutes, and then the first replied for 30 minutes more. Thousands of people stood in the open air and listened to ideas and values, not insults.
Lincoln lost that Senate race — but the debates made him famous across the whole country. Two years later, in 1860, he was elected President of the United States. 🎩
About 100 years later, American schools created a debate style named after these two men: Lincoln–Douglas Debate (often just called "LD"). It became popular in the 1970s and 1980s as a calmer alternative to fast team debate.
Key idea 💡: A good debater can argue both sides of a question. You are not learning to "be right." You are learning to think clearly and listen well.
The big question of 1858 was slavery — and whether it should spread into America's new western lands. Here is what each man said, in simple words.
"Let each place vote for itself."
"Slavery is a moral wrong."
🪤 The most famous moment — "The Freeport Question": Lincoln asked a clever trap question: "Can settlers keep slavery out of a territory before it becomes a state?" Douglas said yes — slavery can't survive unless local laws protect it. This answer pleased the North but made the southern states furious, splitting Douglas's own party. Two years later it helped cost him the presidency.
💬 Lincoln's most powerful line:
"In the right to eat the bread, without the leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns, he is my equal… and the equal of every living man."
⚖️ Be honest: Lincoln still held some racist views of his time — he did not support equal voting or full equality in 1858. He argued about natural rights (life, liberty, your own work), not full equality.
🏁 Who won? Douglas won the 1858 Senate seat. But the debates made Lincoln famous all over America — and in their 1860 rematch for President, Lincoln won. 🎉
This short film gives the big picture of China's "lying flat" (躺平) movement — millions of young people stepping back from the race. It is the heart of today's debate. 🎯
20 million young people "lie flat" and say no to the rat race
Before we debate, watch these two short films about China today. One celebrates hard work and ambition; the other shows young people who decided to "lie flat" and stop racing. Keep both in mind — you will argue both! 🎯

Value = the most important idea you are fighting for (for example: happiness, freedom, well-being, justice).
Criterion = the test you use to measure it ("How do we know which side protects the value best?").

Golden rule for beginners ✨: Use the magic sentence — "My opponent says ___ , but actually ___ , because ___ ." This single pattern is 90% of debating.

"Good morning, judges. I affirm the resolution. My value is human well-being — a calm, healthy, and happy mind. My criterion is inner peace: whichever side gives people a more peaceful mind wins.
My first reason: modern life is making us sick. The Chinese '996' schedule — 9 to 9, six days a week — leads to burnout, anxiety, and even early death. People have known this for a long time: when you stop drowning in worry about the past and the future, you can finally breathe. That is exactly what 'lying flat' does.
My second reason: rest is not laziness — it is wisdom. A farmer rests the soil so it can grow food again. A person who rests the mind can think clearly and live kindly. 'Lying flat' is young people choosing health over a machine that only wants to use them.
My third reason: a meaningful life is not a bank account. 'Hollow vein' (空脉) describes workers who feel empty. The cure is simple: stop chasing, and find peace right now. For these reasons, I affirm. Thank you." ✨
"My opponent says lying flat is lazy, but actually it is brave, because it takes courage to say 'no' to a whole society that is shouting 'work harder!'
My opponent says we will have no money, but actually money did not save the burned-out '996' workers. What good is a big salary if you are too tired and anxious to enjoy your life? The truth is that the richest person is the one with a peaceful mind. 🪷
My opponent says we are sabotaging our future, but actually we are protecting our future — our health. A person who rests will still be alive and well at 40. The machine does not care about you; you must care about yourself. I still affirm."

"Good morning, judges. I negate the resolution. My value is a responsible life — building a real future for yourself and your family. My criterion is long-term results: whichever side actually helps people live better in ten years wins.
My first reason: rest is healthy, but 'lying flat' is giving up. There is a difference between a good night's sleep and quitting forever. 'Let it rot' (摆烂) literally means: stop trying. If a student 'lets it rot', they fail. If a doctor 'lies flat', the patient dies. Giving up has a cost. 🏥
My second reason: peace needs a foundation. It is easy to feel calm when your parents pay for your food. But rice, a house, and medicine all cost money. Ambition built the hospitals, the trains, and the phone in your hand. If everyone 'lies flat,' who builds the world? 🏗️
My third reason: rest is for recovering, not for quitting. A short rest helps you work better afterward — a few minutes of calm, then back to a life of effort and care for others. No wise person ever said 'quit your job and let your family starve.' Turning a little rest into a whole life plan is a big mistake. For these reasons, I negate. Thank you."
"My opponent says ambition makes us sick, but actually poverty makes us far sicker. Stress from a hard job is real — but stress from having no money for food or medicine is much worse. 💸
My opponent says money cannot buy peace, but actually money buys safety: a doctor when you are ill, a roof in the rain, and food for your children. You cannot meditate your way out of an empty stomach.
My opponent says they are protecting their future, but actually they are throwing it away. The years from 15 to 25 are when you build skills. A teenager who 'lies flat' now will have no choices later — and that is a sad, trapped kind of life, not a free one. Effort today is freedom tomorrow. I negate."

👋 Goodbye and good luck! Remember: in Lincoln–Douglas debate you don't have to believe your side — you just have to argue it well. Today you might say "lying flat is wisdom," and five minutes later say "lying flat is lazy." That flexible, open mind is the real prize. See you next time, debaters! 🌟
The bagel scene: when "nothing matters" becomes a black hole
A 2022 film about a Chinese family living in America. The mother, Evelyn, is tired and runs a failing laundromat. She is stressed, always busy, and disappointed in her daughter. Then she learns she can connect to thousands of other "versions" of herself across a giant multiverse. It won 7 Academy Awards (Oscars). 🏆
The villain, Jobu Tupaki, has seen everything, everywhere, all at once. Seeing it all at the same time made her believe that nothing matters. She builds an "everything bagel" 🥯 — a black hole that swallows all meaning.
This is the dark heart of "let it rot" (摆烂) and the despair hiding under "lying flat." When the world feels too big, too fast, and pointless, a young person can fall into the bagel: Why try? Nothing matters anyway.
Evelyn's daughter is named Joy — and she is the one afflicted with this despair. Her name is a quiet metaphor 🎭: everyone keeps calling her "Joy," yet joy is the very thing she does not have. The cheerful name only makes her emptiness louder.
Here's the twist: the "monster" Jobu Tupaki is really Evelyn's own daughter, Joy — a hurting child who feels unseen and crushed by her mother's expectations. The villain is not evil. She is in pain.
At first, Evelyn tries to fight and fix her daughter — exactly like Side B: "Try harder! Be better!" It fails. It only pushes Joy deeper into the bagel.
The answer the film gives is surprising. Evelyn stops pushing. She chooses kindness (her gentle husband Waymond's superpower) and finally tries to understand what her daughter is actually going through. She meets her child's pain with empathy instead of expectation.
💬 Evelyn, choosing to stay present even in a meaningless universe:
"Of all the places I could be, I just want to be here with you."
💬 Waymond's quiet philosophy: "Please be kind, especially when we don't know what's going on."
Here is the most important idea on this whole page. Our debate asked: Is lying flat good or bad? Side A said good. Side B said bad. But arguing both sides hard is not meant to crown a winner — it is a method for breaking out of the either/or box and unlocking a third, richer way of looking at the problem.
The movie does exactly this. It refuses the binary. It says the real question was never "lazy vs. hardworking" at all — it was "seen vs. unseen," "connected vs. alone." Young people don't "lie flat" because they are lazy; they lie flat because they feel crushed and unseen. So the cure is not more pressure (Side B) and not pure withdrawal (Side A) — it is empathy: a parent who finally understands. That answer was invisible while we were stuck arguing good-or-bad. 🔓
🧠 This is what thinking through a hard problem is FOR. You debate both sides not to "win," but to climb above the two sides and see something neither side could see alone. The reward of debate is a new idea.
📣 A third resolution to try (debate this one too!):
"Resolved: The real cure for 'lying flat' is not more pressure or less effort — it is empathy and being understood."
A good debater keeps listening — even after the round ends. These extra videos add new angles on rest, flow, and understanding. They are not "Side A" or "Side B" — they are food for thought. 🍃
