无光之峰 · a Dungeons & Dragons world
A thousand stone towers. One moment of light each morning. And someone putting the towers out, one by one.
Read this first. It is the one idea everything else comes from.
A thousand stone towers stand in a green valley. They are made of limestone. Warm rain cut them over millions of years. They are the tallest things here. So the sun touches them first.
Then something strange happens. For one short moment at dawn, the light carries information. It is not just bright. It has a pattern, like speech. Dwarves, elves and halflings can read that pattern. It is how they talk to the Creator. They call it First Light.
Humans hear nothing at all. Nobody knows why. It is the oldest question in the world.
English narration. Turn on 中文 above for Chinese subtitles.
Four kinds of people live in this world. If these words are new to you, read this first.
They are not animals and they are not magic creatures. They are people. They talk, work, cook, argue and fall in love. They are just built a little differently from each other.
| People | 中文 | How tall | Lives about | The light |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halfling | 半身人 | 3 ft · 90 cm | 150 years | hears it |
| Dwarf | 矮人 | 4 ft · 120 cm | 350 years | hears it |
| Elf | 精灵 | 6 ft · 180 cm | 700 years | hears it best |
| Human | 人类 | 5½ ft · 170 cm | 80 years | hears nothing |
Halflings are small people. A grown halfling is about three feet tall. They are adults, not children.
They have round faces and curly hair. Their feet are big and hairy. They do not wear shoes.
They love food, gardens and home. They are quiet and brave. They are also famously lucky.
Dwarves are short and very strong. A dwarf is about four feet tall. They are wide and heavy.
Most dwarves grow long beards. They live about 350 years, so a dwarf of 68 is still young.
They cut stone and work metal. They build cities inside mountains. They are stubborn, they keep promises, and their jokes are very dry.
Elves are tall and thin. Their ears are pointed. They look young for hundreds of years.
They live 700 years or more. They do not sleep. They rest for four hours with their eyes open.
They see and hear better than other people. They are patient, and they are slow to change their minds.
Humans are people like you and me. They are the most common people in most worlds.
They live the shortest lives — about 80 years. So they hurry. They build fast, learn fast, and change fast.
In other books halflings are sometimes called hobbits. It is the same idea. D&D says halfling.
New to the game? Start here. You can learn it in ten minutes.
Dungeons & Dragons is a game you play with friends. People say D&D. You do not need a board. You need dice, paper, and your imagination.
One player is the Dungeon Master. People say DM. The DM describes the world. The DM plays every person you meet. The DM is not your enemy.
Each other player controls one hero. In this world, that is Austin, Bruce or Enoch. You say what your hero does. The DM says what happens next.
When something is hard or risky, you roll dice. Nobody wins the game. The group makes a story together.
D&D uses seven dice. The number says how many sides it has. A d6 has six sides. A d20 has twenty sides.
The d20 is the important one. You roll it for almost everything. d20
Almost every action uses the same rule. It is very simple.
The target number is called the Difficulty Class. People say DC. The DM chooses it.
| Task | DC |
|---|---|---|
| Easy — climb a low wall | 10 |
| Medium — pick a good lock | 15 |
| Hard — climb a wet spire | 20 |
| Very hard — read dead light | 25 |
Bruce wants to climb a spire. Pick a difficulty and roll.
Sometimes you roll two d20s instead of one. With advantage you keep the higher one. With disadvantage you keep the lower one.
In a fight it works the same way, but with 2d6. You roll 3d6 and keep the best two, or the worst two.
Austin has help from the light at dawn, so he rolls with advantage. A hero in the dark rolls with disadvantage.
Every hero has six numbers. Each number gives a modifier. That is the number you add to your roll.

A saving throw is a roll to avoid something bad. Poison, fire, a fall, a trap. Same rule: d20 plus a modifier against a DC.
Spells do not use saving throws. A hostile spell is a contest against your Ward. See the fight rules.
A fight happens in rounds. One round is about six seconds. Everybody gets one turn each round.
First, everybody rolls 2d6 and adds their DEX modifier. The highest number goes first. You keep that order every round.
On your turn you can move and take one action. Some heroes also get a bonus action. Bruce gets one. He can hide as a bonus action, which is why he is hard to hit.
| Action | 中文 | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Attack | 攻击 | Swing a weapon at an enemy. |
| Cast a Spell | 施法 | Use one of your spells. It costs magic points. |

An attack is a contest. You roll 2d6 and add your attack score. The defender rolls 2d6 and adds their defence score.
The higher total wins. A tie goes to the defender, so a tie is a miss.
There are three attack scores and three defence scores. Each one is built from your class, your level and your traits. The fight rules page has all six formulas.

When you win, you roll your weapon’s dice. Then the defender takes off their absorb. Armour soaks damage here. It never stops a hit.
Take what is left off the enemy’s hit points. People say HP. A hit always does at least 1. At 0 hit points the enemy falls.
Bruce attacks at +5. The zombie parries at −2 and has 22 hit points. Bruce does 1d6+3, and sneak attack adds 2d6. The zombie attacks at +3 against Bruce’s Parry of +5, and his leather absorbs 1.
At 0 hit points your hero falls down. They are not dead yet. On each of your turns you roll a d20. This is a death saving throw.
| You roll | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 10 or more | One success. |
| 9 or less | One failure. |
| Three successes | Your hero is stable. |
| Three failures | Your hero dies. |
A friend can help. If Austin heals you for even one hit point, you stand up. This is why the party does not leave him behind.
The places and the people. Tap 🔊 to hear a name, or more to read about it.
North is up. North is also where the spires are already dead.
Shanmu is not a spire. She is far bigger than all of them.
Shanmu is wide enough that her top holds farms. She is tall enough that her shoulders sit in cloud. She hears the light before anyone else in the world. Three peoples share her, stacked one above the other.
Not everyone in the Shadow Side is human. Dwarves, elves and halflings live there too. And something quiet happens to them.
They work at night. They sleep in the day. They stop going outside at dawn. They miss one morning, then a week of mornings, then a whole season. The light does not punish them. It just gets quieter. One day it is not there at all.
People call them the Dimmed. They are not evil. They are not dead. They are Listening Kin who cannot hear any more.
This is the part outsiders get wrong. A halfling rogue is not in Nine Lanterns to get rich. A rogue is there to find the Dimmed and take them back to the lit side of the world.
It works like this. The rogue goes into the Shadow Side and finds one of them. They get that person out of the alleys, out of the city, and out to a valley where a living spire still stands. Then they wait together for sunrise. Halflings call this a Dawn Walk.
Most of the Dimmed only drifted away, and what drifts away can be walked back. But some gave the light away on purpose. Those ones hear nothing, and the rogue walks home alone.
Bruce has a long, funny, well-practised speech about why taking from a smuggler is not really theft. He gives it to anyone who asks. He has never once mentioned the other thing he does.
A cleric who hears the light, a thief who moves in the dark, and a sage who worked out how the light works.
He has heard First Light from the highest town in the world every morning of his life. He has never got used to it. He makes tea, asks after your mother, and notices when you have not eaten.
“I don't think it's frightened of us. I think it's just very old, and nobody has sat with it.”
Bruce knows the gaps. In this country you cannot climb over anything, so every road is a puzzle of holes and caves. He is one of six people who can take you north. In winter he works the Shadow Side — and he has walked nine of the Dimmed back to the lit side of the world.
“Six days over the top, and you'll be alive at the end. Or a day and a half under. — Right. I'll pack the extra rope.”
Enoch asked the wrong question in public and paid for it for eight years. He said the spires are the machine, and that a machine can be broken. The Archive called it alarming and shelved him. He was right.
“The tower isn't catching the sun. The tower is handing it on. … We should go now, I think.”
He is not angry. That is the frightening part.
He was an elf. His name was Wei Lan. He read First Light better than anyone alive. He was gentle.
Then his sister died in a winter, and the light gave no warning. He asked the dawn why. He asked every morning for forty years. He got the same patient silence.
So he asked something else. A power that lives where light does not reach. It answered him at once, in words. That is the whole trap: it replies.
The deal took his light. He did not understand the price until the next morning, when the sun came up and said nothing to him. It has said nothing since.
So he kills towers. He grows a rot in the caves below a spire until its stone goes black. Eleven valleys have gone quiet. The dead in them wake the next morning and follow him. They walk in daylight without trouble, because they are already unlit — the sun has nothing left to say to them. People call that army the Grey Tide.
Sections 04 and 05 taught you the idea. This is the reference you keep open while you play.

Clerics and wizards prepare spells differently. Enoch chooses from his spellbook. Austin does not read anything — he listens at dawn, and takes what the light gives him.
When the DM says you level up, four things happen. You roll your hit die and add hit points. You may get a new class feature. You work out your magic points again. Every third level, your level step goes up by one, and all six combat scores rise with it.
Many tables do not count experience points at all. The DM simply says "you all go up a level" after something big. That is called milestone levelling, and it is easier.
