This is the record of the first session, in pictures.

The party is Austin, Bruce and
Enoch. A cleric, a rogue and a wizard. They all live on Shanmu, the
Mountain Mother.

Five elven children came up out of the cloud.
五个精灵孩子从云中走了上来。
Yunding, just before sunrise. Austin was sweeping the
east terrace. A dog started barking at the west stair. Five children
walked up out of the cloud. Their feet were bare and cut. They did not
ask for food. They stood at the gate and waited for the sun. They
wanted to hear it.
云顶，日出前。奥斯汀正在打扫东露台，西边台阶上有狗开始叫。五个孩子从云中走上来。他们赤着脚，脚上有伤口。他们不讨吃的，只是站在门口等太阳，因为他们想听见它。
The sun came up. Everyone on the terrace heard First Light. All five
children began to cry. They had not heard it in four months.

Xiaoye. The tallest girl wiped her face and stood up
straight. “My name is Xiaoye. We come from White Leaf. Four months ago
our spire went black. Then the morning stopped coming. It is always
night there now.”

Then he said: “Eleven days north. Somebody has to go and look at it.”
He turned to Austin. “Not to fight it. To look at it, and come back and
tell me true.”

Day 1 · morning 第一天 · 上午
02The three of them set off 三人出发
They had never worked together before. They left the same
morning.

Austin said yes to Master Yun. Bruce was hired to guide them, and
haggled about it first. Enoch invited himself, and nobody could talk him
out of it. By mid-morning they were on the north road, walking to
White Leaf.
奥斯汀答应了云师父。布鲁斯受雇当向导，先讨价还价了一番。以诺自己要求同行，谁也劝不住他。上午过半，三个人已经踏上北路，朝白叶村走去。
Enoch came up the stair at a run. He had worked it out
years ago. Nobody listened. The spires are a machine. A machine can be
broken. He was not going to miss this.
以诺一路跑上台阶。多年前他就想明白了，却没人听他的：石峰是一台机器，而机器是可以被破坏的。这一趟他绝不肯错过。
Days 2–3 · under the mountain 第二至三天 · 山腹之下
03They went under, not over 他们从地下走，没有翻山
In this country you cannot climb over anything. Every road
is a hole.
在这片土地上你无法翻越任何东西。每条路都是一个洞。
The fork. Six days over the top. A day and a half under
it. Bruce knows the gaps, and Bruce chose the caves. They packed
the extra rope and went down into the dark.
岔路口。翻山六天，钻洞一天半。布鲁斯熟悉每一处缝隙，他选了洞穴。他们多带了一捆绳子，下到黑暗里去。
They walked under the mountain for two days. Then the tunnel changed.
The floor was covered in broken stone. There was light ahead. Real light,
coming down from above.

Part of the roof had fallen in. A long time ago, by the look of it. They
climbed up through the hole.

Day 3 · dusk 第三天 · 黄昏
04The tree in the hole in the roof 塌顶之下的大树
A whole valley had fallen in on itself. Something very old
was growing in it.
整座山谷向内塌陷，里面长着一棵非常古老的东西。
The Meeting Tree. One enormous tree, alone, filling the
collapsed valley. Hundreds of huge black ravens sat in its branches. More
wheeled around it. High up there was an old man. He hung upside
down by one ankle.
会面之树。一棵巨大的树独自立在塌陷的山谷里。数百只大黑鸦停在枝头，绕着它盘旋。而在高处，有一个老人，被一只脚踝吊着，倒挂在那里。
The ravens. Bigger than eagles, and far too clever.
They watched the party climb out of the hole. Not one flew away.
那些渡鸦。比鹰还大，而且聪明得过分。它们看着队伍从洞里爬上来，一只也没飞走。Nine days upside down. The old man was still alive and
in no hurry at all. He would not come down early. Something at the
roots was the reason he could not.

Day 3 · the first fight 第三天 · 第一场战斗
05The snake at the roots 树根下的蛇
The party's first fight, and they picked it on purpose.
队伍的第一场战斗，而且是他们主动挑的。
Kugen, the Withered Root. A huge blind serpent, coiled in
the roots below the old man. It hunts by warmth. The
ravens had dived at its head for days. They could not drive it off.
The party went in to get him down.
枯根。一条巨大的苍白巨蛇，双目失明，只靠体温捕猎，盘在老人下方的树根里。渡鸦已经俯冲攻击它好几天，却赶不走它。队伍冲上去，要把老人救下来。
It was a hard fight. The snake is blind, so hiding did not help. It is
afraid of fire, and that did.
那是一场硬仗。蛇是瞎的，所以躲藏没有用。但它怕火，这一点有用。
Greybeard Farwalker. They cut him down. He thanked
them. He asked after the children by name first. Then he answered
three questions honestly. Then he walked north-east and left them to
it.
灰须远行者。他们把他放了下来。他道了谢，先问了孩子们的名字，然后老老实实回答了三个问题。之后他往东北方向走了，把这件事留给他们。What is under the patch. He wears a patch over the
eye he lost. Behind it there is no empty socket. There is a dragon's
eye, held in a brass rim. It is awake.

while they worked on the rope. A silver dragon swims up the whole
arm. It turns right around it. Its eyes are yellow. Smoke comes out
of its nose.
Kill a dragon and this mark comes with it. Almost nobody alive has
one. It says the man wearing it is a great warrior. People
who know the mark treat him like one.
Nobody chooses it, though, because it is also a curse.
A dragon can always see you. You cannot hide from one. You
cannot be invisible to one. And every saving throw you make against
a dragon takes −2.

Days 4–7 · the quiet valleys 第四至七天 · 寂静的山谷
06North, through the valleys that stopped 北行，穿过停摆的山谷
Every valley they crossed was quieter than the last.

The camp at Sixteen Spires. They kept watch in turns.
Halfway through the night the dead walked into the firelight. Slowly,
from three sides at once.
十六峰的营地。他们轮流守夜。半夜时分，死者慢慢走进火光里——同时从三个方向。
The Grey Tide. Slow, weak, and always more of them.
Daylight does nothing to them. They have no light left to burn.
灰潮。缓慢、虚弱，而且总是源源不断。白天对它们没有作用——它们身上本来就没有光可烧。By the sixth day they came in crowds. A whole
village of them. They walked north up the frozen road. The party was
going the same way.

The farmers in the turnip field. These ones were not
walking north, and they were not rotting. They stood in their own field.
Their tools were still in their hands. They watched the party go past. Their eyes were green. That was the first green light the
party saw. Nobody could say yet what it meant.

Day 8 · the boundary 第八天 · 边界
07The edge of the dark 黑暗的边缘
You can put your hand across it. On one side, a green
mountain path on a bright afternoon. On the other, night. Not dusk and
not shadow — night, with a straight edge. Enoch stood at the line for a long
time. He said very little.
你可以把手伸过去。一边是明亮午后的青翠山路，另一边是夜。不是黄昏，也不是阴影——是夜，而且边缘笔直。以诺在那条线前站了很久，几乎没说话。
Day 8 · inside the dark 第八天 · 黑暗之中
08White Leaf 白叶村
Eleven days north of Yunding, and four months into its own
night.
云顶以北十一天路程，也是它自己的第四个月长夜。
The village. Doors standing open. Frost on everything,
inside and out. No moon and no stars. The sky is not dark. It is empty.
村子。门都敞着。里里外外结满了霜。没有月亮也没有星星——天不是暗，是空的。Granny Yulan. She was still there. She was not hiding,
and she was not surprised to see them. She asked about the children
before she asked anything else.
玉兰婆婆。她还在。她没有躲，看见他们也不吃惊。她开口先问的是孩子们，然后才问别的。
Day 8 · where the session ended 第八天 · 本场结束之处
09The courtyard of green lanterns 绿灯之庭
Nobody drew first. That is where we stopped.
没有人先出手。我们就停在这里。
The standoff. She walked them into the courtyard behind
her house. Eight green lanterns hang around the walls of it. She holds
the ninth in her hand. That one is brighter than the rest. The party
stood across the yard from her and did not move. Nor did she.
对峙。她把他们带到屋后的院子里。院墙四周挂着八盏绿灯，第九盏在她手上，比其余的都亮。队伍站在院子的另一头，一动不动。她也一样。
By then the party had worked out most of it. The lanterns burn the same green as
the farmers' eyes. She is holding something
that belongs to this valley. And she is spending it.
到这时队伍已经猜出了大半：灯里的绿光，和农夫眼里的绿是同一种。她手上握着本属于这座山谷的某样东西，而她正在一点一点用掉它。
Nobody in the party thinks she is the villain.
That is the interesting part, and it is where session two starts.
队伍里没有人认为她是反派。这正是有意思的地方，第二场就从这里开始。
10What they carried out 他们带走了什么
Three things came out of the tree valley. All three are
dragon, and nobody has said why yet.
从树谷里带出了三样东西。三样都和龙有关，而原因还没有人说得清。
Silver dragon scale armour. Every scale is the size of
a hand. It is much lighter than it looks. It is cold to touch.
Normal missile attacks cannot hurt the wearer. Arrows, bolts and
slung stones all fail. Magic is another matter.
银龙鳞甲。每一片鳞都有手掌大小。它比看上去轻得多，摸上去是凉的。普通远程攻击伤不到穿戴者。箭矢、弩矢和投石一律无效。法术则是另一回事。
The dragon's eye lantern. Brass, amber glass, and a
ring on top to carry it by. Its light is not a flame. Look through
the glass and something looks back.
While you hold it you can see invisible creatures. You can see
magical creatures too. And you can see magic itself, wherever it is.
龙眼提灯。黄铜、琥珀色玻璃，顶上有个提环。灯里的光不是火焰。透过玻璃看进去，里面有东西回看你。只要你提着它，就能看见隐形的生物，也能看见魔法生物，还能看见魔法本身，不论它在哪里。Dragon's blood. One small vial, corked and sealed
with black wax. The blood is still warm. There are ten draughts
in it, and one draught cures anything.
The owner does not even have to drink it. Once a day they can cast
cure light wounds at double strength. Every healing
spell they cast themselves gets +2.
Bruce is carrying it. Austin is not sure he should.
龙血。一小瓶，塞着木塞，封着黑蜡。血还是温的。瓶里有十份，一份能治好任何伤病。持有者甚至不必喝下它：每天一次可以用双倍强度施展轻伤治疗术，而且自己施放的每个治疗法术都获得 +2。这瓶在布鲁斯身上，奥斯汀不太确定该不该让他拿着。
These follow the
2d6 fight rules. A missile attack that
cannot hurt you is not even rolled for.
这些都按 2d6 战斗规则运作。伤不到你的远程攻击，连骰都不用掷。
11Next time 下一场
Two things are waiting in that courtyard.
院子里还有两件事在等着。
The Sleepless. They are the village. They are still
wearing their own clothes. If the lanterns go out, they stop.
不眠者。他们就是这个村子。他们还穿着自己的衣服。灯一灭，他们就会停下。The lamp. One dawn is left inside it. It is the last
one this valley had. It can be opened. It can only be opened
once.

12The road, in order 沿途路线
Eight days from the summit to the dark. North is up.
从山顶到黑暗，八天路程。上方是北方。
The orange dashed line is the six-day road over the top. The
blue dotted line is the Sunless River. That way takes a day and a half.
There is no dawn at either end of it. The party went under.
橙色虚线是六天的山上路线。蓝色点线是无光河：那条路一天半，但两头都没有黎明。队伍走的是地下。
